Project CSSDT 15.819.02.03F Design and fabrication of coordination compounds based on 3d metals and polydentate ligands with different donor atom sets

Type : Project for young scientists, SCSTD code 15.819.02.03F
Head : Lilia Croitor, Ph.D.
Duration : 2015 - 2016
Division(s) : Laboratory of Physical Methods of Solid State Investigation “Tadeusz Malinowski”

Metal–organic materials (MOMs) and coordination polymers (CPs) are among the most prolific research areas of inorganic coordination chemistry and crystal engineering in the last 15 years [1,2]. The research interest to these compounds is increasing rapidly due to their potential applications such as synthetic sponges with adsorption properties, luminescence, magnetism, catalysis, redox activity, and astonishing architectures. Due to inherent modulation, different CPs and MOMs topologies can be obtained by combining metal ions (node) with organic molecules (linker). Ligands used in construction of CPs have to mediate metal ions. This usually requires multidentate ligands, with two or more electron-donor atoms. The combination of pyridyl and carboxyl groups in a single “bridge”-type ligand results in highly interconnected networks and gives limitless possibilities for increase network stability and porosity [3,4].

The project was aimed on directed design, and synthesis of new coordination compounds with predicted composition, architectural topology and specific properties.

The objectives of the project were:

  • Design of coordination compounds by rational combination of metal ions with organic fragments (linker), namely, polydentate ligands with two or more donor atoms. The size of the resulting voids will be defined by the length and functionalities of the organic units.
  • Implementation of the single crystal X-ray structural study and spectroscopic characterization of the fabricated materials, and analysis of homogeneity of obtained materials using the facilities of powder diffraction.
  • Analysis of factors responsible for the dimensionality of new coordination compounds and application possibilities.
  • Study of the structure – properties relationship for new coordination compounds with the attraction of arsenal of the available in the team disposal investigation techniques.

The implementation of these objectives was carried out on coordination compounds containing a number of transition 3d- metals, and representatives of the main classes of the accessible organic linkers including dicarboxylic acids, aromatic amines, oximes and their derivatives, as well as the complementary organic molecules with the bridge functions as auxiliary ligands.
